Creating Opportunities to Empower Youth
Recess Guardians has been around since 2008 and has been lucky enough to work in schools across Canada. Over this time, we have created a few different programs that allow us to empower kids in different ways and get them playing again.
Recess Guardians In-School Program
This is our flagship program and something we have perfected since our inception. During this half day session, we work in the gym with students in the grade 4-6 range by teaching them games and activities that are good for kids of all ages. We also discuss subjects like inclusion, sportsmanship, communication, etc. and at the end of the session, they get the opportunity to apply what they learned by instructing a group of younger students.
After our session is complete, we have a multitude of ways that the class will take on the role as Recess Guardians’ leaders, but it is totally up to the educators and students on how to proceed.

Recess Guardians’ Virtual Leadership Program
We basically packed up our In-School Program and put it online! With 5 core modules that touch on leadership, inclusion, sportsmanship, communication and conflict resolution, we are able to help schools across Canada implement our program with the click of a button. We even added a parent/guardian piece so that our lessons can be taught at home as well. With a new module added every month, schools can keep the program fresh and spark it over and over again.

active8 Your School
active8 is a box program that contains sports/play equipment and two months’ worth of games and activities. It works to help strengthen the leadership skills that the Recess Guardians’ program has taught, but also gives the kids more ideas on games to play with their peers, along with the equipment to make this dream a reality. Each box is curated by experts in play and has games that can be played by anyone at any ability level. The programming has been made so that there is no adult help required, and that the kids can just open up the box and start playing.

active8 Your Summer
Over the years, we have been so fortunate to work with thousands of kids over the school year. This got us thinking though, what do they get up to in the summer? With this in mind, we created active8 Your Summer!
This box program is similar to the School box, but this time we made it more focused on smaller groups, or even individual games and activities. Each box contains equipment and programming for 2 months and can be played by 1 person or more. The games are very specific for the summertime and will get kids more active and outdoors. We also have different games that will allow an entire group of kids, or a family, to play with one another and create positive memories.
The programming is done so that adults don’t have to help at all. The kids should be able to just open up the box, grab the equipment and programming, and go outside!
